Vehicle Diagnostics
At Harris-Mayes Country Cars, we can diagnose and repair common issues with your Land Rover or MINI.
Land Rover
1. Air Suspension System Failures
- Symptoms: Vehicle sagging on one side, dashboard warnings (“Suspension Fault”), harsh ride, or the compressor running continuously.
- Diagnostic Need: Identifying leaks, faulty height sensors, or compressor failures, particularly common in Discovery 3/4 and Range Rover models.
2. Electrical and Electronic Issues
- Symptoms: Parasitic battery drain, faulty infotainment systems, flickering headlights, and inoperable key fobs.
- Diagnostic Need: Complex wiring issues, sensor failures, and control module communication failures require specialized diagnostics.
- Electric Parking Brake: Known for failures, often stemming from low system voltage or actuator issues.
3. Engine and Performance Issues
- Turbocharger Problems: Loss of power and black smoke from the exhaust, often due to oil supply issues.
- Timing Chain/Belt Failure: Rattling noise on cold start (5.0L V8 or 2.0L Ingenium engines).
- EGR Valve Issues: Causes “Restricted Performance” mode and enginehesitation.
- Fuel System: Faulty injectors or low fuel pressure (OBD codes P0010, PO200).
4. Cooling System and Oil Leaks
- Coolant Leaks/Overheating: Failed water pumps or cracked expansion tanks (common in older Discovery/Freelander models).
- Oil Leaks: Damaged rocker cover gaskets or rear main seals.
5. DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and AdBlue
- Symptoms: “DPF Full” warning, “Restricted Performance” message, or increased fuel consumption.
- Diagnostic Need: To determine if the filter is blocked or if sensors are triggering false warnings.
6. Transmission Issues
- Symptoms: Jerky gear changes, delayed shifting, or failure to shift.
- Diagnostic Need: Low fluid levels or sensor faults.
Mini
1. Engine and Performance Issues
- Timing Chain Issues (2007–2016 Models): A very common, serious fault where the timing chain stretches, causing rattling noises on startup, engine misfiring, or rough idling.
- Ignition System Faults: Spark plug or ignition coil failures, leading to misfires
- High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) Failure: Often causes hard starting, stalling, or a “crank no start” situation.
2. Electrical and Sensor Issues
- Battery Drain/Alternator Issues: Voltage irregularities can cause numerous false warnings and “limp mode”.
- Body Control Module (BCM) Water Damage: Water leaks from the sunroof or windshield seals can damage the BCM, causing random issues like windows not working, central locking failure, or lights staying on.
- Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensor Failure: Causes rough idle, hesitation, and stalling.
- Oxygen Sensor/Catalytic Converter Failures: Triggers check engine lights and reduces fuel efficiency.
3. Cooling System and Oil Leaks
- Water Pump and Thermostat Housing Leaks: Plastic components in the cooling system (2007–2013 models) become brittle and crack, leading to leaks, overheating, and low coolant warnings.
- Oil Leaks: Common from the rocker cover, sump, and crank seals.
4. Transmission and Steering
- CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) Failure (2002–2008): Jerky acceleration, slipping, or total failure.
- Electric Power Steering Pump (EPAS) Failure: Older models (2002–2008) often experience power steering failure, resulting in heavy, stiff steering, often accompanied by a whining noise.
